Global Investment Casting Market: Snapshot The global investment casting market is anticipated to witness high growth opportunities birthing on the back of the increase in decentralized power generation. The global investment casting market could bear the positive effect of the use of simulations for optimizing the casting process. Players operating in the precision casting market are expected to collaborate with a view to innovate sophisticated casting technologies with the help of simulations. This could allow increasing the casting yield and reducing the shop-floor time. Casting is an energy-intensive procedure because of the high temperature requirement for meting materials efficiently. Thus, the need to overcome high energy cost is predicted to increase the demand in the global investment casting market. The presence of several regional and international manufacturers is projected to keep the global investment casting market fragmented during the course of the forecast period 2018-2028. Factors such as innovation, regulatory compliance, quality, and price are expected to form the basis of competition in the global investment casting market. Nonetheless, there could be other factors impacting the performance of manufacturers in the global investment casting market: service delivery innovation, technology innovation, and supply/demand imbalance. The global investment casting market could stay highly competitive in the foreseeable future. The demand in the global investment casting market is forecast to gather pace with increasing requirement in highly automated vehicle (HAV). • Investment Casting Finishes
What finishes are available for Investment Casting? Regardless of whether you are familiar with the investment casting process, it`s always good to have a helping hand when it comes to choosing the preferred finish for your casting requirements. There are many different finishing methods available for investment castings, depending on the material being used the finishing can be a critical part of the process to determine its quality and performance. All of which, Investacast are able to provide for you. Types of Finishes available Some of the most commonly used finishes are; Stainless Steel Shot Blast, one of the most common finishes for investment castings, shot blasting is a mechanical post-production finishing service. It uses a rapid impact process onto the surface of the castings with abrasive media, it will remove post casting or heat treatment scaling leaving a uniform even visual finish. This process is faster and more efficient than linishing or fettling for flash or gate removal on investment castings. Pickle & Passivate is an acid chemical treatment mainly used with stainless steel, which removes any contaminations, scaling or any discolouration. During the process, a passive barrier forms on the metal, this reduces the chemical reactivity of the metals surface. When used on stainless steels, it removes any ferrite from its surface which will prevent any rusting of the metal. Electropolishing is commonly used to remove a thin layer from the surface of the metal part and leaves a high quality surface, this can improve the surface quality by 50% and is 30 times more efficient than mechanical polishing. Typically used for stainless steel and similar alloys in the food and chemical processing industries. Stainless steel is one of the most common alloys used with electropolishing, but it is also compatible with brass, carbon steels, copper and nickel alloys. Glass Bead Blast is used to provide a more uniform satin like finish, with a non-directional textured surface. Achieved by high pressure blasting with a silicate glass bead media. No material is removed from the surface of the casting during the process. E-Cote is an electrophoretically applied paint coating, which was originally developed for the automotive industry due to it being economical and also providing a superior coverage, which is also corrosion resistant. E-Cote can cover any metal that conducts electricity such as, aluminium, zinc, brass and steel. Light Aluminium Oxide uses a similar process to stainless steel shot blast, but using a more abrasive sand-like media, resulting in less shatter of the particles which produce lower dust levels. Aluminium oxide has a low-iron content, so when used, it will not leave any rust on the surface of the casting. Using aluminium oxide is a cost-effective option to achieve uniform finishes on product. Powder Coating / Painting is a type of coating which forms a skin over the casting once heated. Using a powder coating is cost effective, environmentally friendly, is tough and produces a high quality finish. Powder coated products are more resistant against impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light and other extreme weather conditions. It also reduces the risk of scratches, chips, abrasions, fading and other wear and tear issues. A Multitude of colours and textures can be applied by powder coating.

  • Defects in Investment Casting – Part 2
As discussed in Part 1 of our [Casting Defects" Blog there are numerous opportunities for problems to present themselves in the complex Investment Casting process, resulting in a variety of casting defects. Understanding the causes of these defects is essential to both maintaining casting quality and enabling the correct remedial action to be undertaken. One common casting defect is shrinkage porosity/cavitation which can weaken the integrity of the part and cause it to fail in service. There are multiple causes of shrinkage type defects in castings; these include poor feeding and incorrect metal pouring and mould temperatures. Strict control of the metal temperature is achieved at Investacast by the use of bespoke Laser Pyrometer technology. We utilise the latest casting simulation software to simulate the total casting process to ensure the correct feeding system is adopted for the part. This simulation process is undertaken at the start of every product development and ensures that we achieve sound product every time. Other casting defects include ceramic inclusions (these inclusions can occur as a result of poor process control of the ceramic shelling process), poor casting designs or poor housekeeping practices. Investacast work closely with our customers` design teams to ensure the casting design has adequate internal radii, good sectional transitions and minimal isolated heavy sections. Our casting simulation software proof tests customer designs at the earliest stage to ensure a satisfactory design. Our state-of-the-art shell room and highly trained process engineering staff ensure that all process parameters are met during production of the ceramic shell. Porosity is one of the most common defects across the casting industry in all casting processes. Certain alloys are more prone to porosity than others and foundries adopt a variety of measures to reduce porosity; including pre-cast degassing, vacuum casting, Argon shielding and meticulous melt control. Investacast work with the UK`s leading foundry metal treatment supplier to ensure our entire alloy base grades (Nickel, Copper, Aluminium, Cobalt and Steels) are pre-cast treated to minimise the occurrence of gas porosity in our parts. By utilising the most modern casting simulation software, working with customers at the earliest stage of design and adopting best industry practices in terms of process controls, Investacast achieve exceptionally low defects rates compared to the industry average.

  • The Fine Art Investment Casting Process (In a Nutshell)
Artists start the investment casting process by creating an original model from clay or wax. The model is then covered with a durable and flexible mold material like silicone, latex, or polyurethane rubber to create an inner mold. This mold material captures all of the fine details of the original model. Once the inner mold hardens, an outer layer of plaster, silicone or fiberglass is placed around the inner mold to ensure the mold correctly holds its form. Melted wax is then poured into the mold, gradually coating the inner surface. This process is repeated until the desired wax thickness is reached. After the wax hardens it is removed from the mold. The mold can be re-used to duplicate the piece as many times as needed. The wax copy is then sprued to provide channels for burning wax, air and molten metal. Once sprued, the wax copy is covered with several layers of sand and slurry to create a sturdy mold. Once the mold layer is solid, the piece is placed into a kiln, burning the wax away. This leaves a negative image of the final piece within a sand and slurry shell. Without sufficient kiln heating, contact with molten metal will crack this shell under the stress of thermal shock. The empty shell is then filled with molten metal, usually bronze. The bronze piece gradually cools and solidifies, after which we carefully remove the shell. Finally, sprues are removed and any finishing touches, like polishing, are applied. The high accuracy of lost wax casting eliminates the need for extensive machining in most applications.

  • How Humans Have Used Lost Wax Casting Process
The Bronze age began in 3200 BC and it ensued advancements in human technology and innovation. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. It was malleable and ductile so humans could mold it into any shape they wanted. The lost wax casting process was one such process that developed in ancient Indus Valley Civilization, in South Asia. The use of this process was widespread in the past up until the 18th century. Now only a few experienced manufacturers use this process. The products produced are remarkable and they have a classic look to them. If you are interested in getting custom metal sculptures you should check out lost wax casting at Firebird Bronze. They are a well-known name in this industry. Historical Uses of this Process The most common use of this process was to make sculptures. These sculptures have been found all around the world at archeological sites. The ancient Indians used to make animal sculptures which include hollow cast bulls. The founder of Buddhism, Gautama Buddha`s sculptures were found all around Asia. These sculptures were made with the lost wax casting process. The making of small jewelry parts and ornaments was also common. People in Thailand used this process to make bangles. The South American civilization employed this technique to produce some of the region`s typical gold wire and delicate wire ornaments, such as fine ear ornaments. In Vietnam multiple discoveries have been made such as a sickle, this shows that people were also making hand tools with this process. Dentists used this method to make crowns and inlays. Modern Uses In recent times lost wax casting has evolved into investment casting. Now the process requires lesser steps so the product is more refined and requires less machining. This process is employed in making components for aerospace and power generation industries for the production of turbine blades. Similarly, the firearm industry uses it to fabricate the precision parts of weapons. This technique is financially feasible for them. Car companies make engine blocks by using the lost foam technique to produce intricate designs. Why Humans Use This Method As the human civilizations advanced they faced new challenges which required new tools and equipment. The method of carving stone into tools and weapons did not apply to metals/ metal alloys. They discovered that they could make the required object by making a mold of it, pouring the molten metal in it, and letting it solidify. It let them make metal objects that were otherwise impossible to make with hands. The process produced more finished products that required less labor to give a finishing touch. After the end of World War II, specialized metal alloys being produced could not be shaped by conventional methods. It was also not possible to make the complex parts with old methods. The process of lost wax casting was used in investment casting to produce precision parts. The development of 3d printers had made it easier to produce sacrificial molds to be used in Investment Casting. 3d printers can print molds for satellites. The future use of this technique will depend on how it will evolve to meet the needs of ever-changing industry demands.
